Can users see through the hype?

Posted on 19:26 by Unknown
I was just evaluating some PC tuning utilities out on the market. These utilities are so often of inferior quality and have absolutely no concern of whether they actually boost your PC's performance or not. In fact, I'd wager that only in rare circumstances do any of them improve your PC's performance. Remember, even Process Lasso's ProBalance is guaranteed only to help keep your system responsive during high loads - not magically make your PC twice as powerful.

You download demo versions of these other utilities and they find all these errors or 'faults' that need correcting in order to speed up your PC. They often have flashy user interfaces that consume enough RAM to have a negative impact on performance all by themselves.

Their core mission is to make the sale. It has made it harder for me, as I have to differentiate my software from snake oil. However, I think users aren't that dumb.. and can see through the hype, paid reviews, and SEO. Of course, I suppose I'm not really competing against these utilities, as I certainly don't claim to do what they do ;p
